Nebraska National Forest - Buffalo Gap Grasslands offers expansive mixed-grass prairie landscapes combined with ponderosa pine forests, providing exceptional wildlife viewing and recreational opportunities across Nebraska and South Dakota.
Nebraska National Forest - Buffalo Gap Grasslands is a unique blend of forested and prairie ecosystems spread across southwestern Nebraska and northwestern South Dakota. The Nebraska National Forest itself spans approximately 141,864 acres, mostly in Cherry County, Nebraska, and is home to extensive ponderosa pine forests established through large-scale reforestation efforts beginning in the early 20th century. Adjacent to the forest are the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, sprawling over 194,000 acres in South Dakota, preserving one of the largest intact mixed-grass prairie ecosystems in the United States. Together, these lands support a rich diversity of flora and fauna including mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, wild turkey, and greater sage-grouse, along with native grasses and wildflowers. The area’s geography features rugged buttes, deep canyons, river valleys, and expansive open grasslands, with the White River carving through parts of the grasslands creating scenic vistas and natural habitats. Historically, this landscape was home to Native American tribes, including the Lakota and Pawnee, and later was managed by Conservation Corps and multiple federal agencies to promote forestation and rangeland conservation. Today, visitors enjoy a range of recreational activities such as hiking, horseback riding, hunting, wildlife photography, and fishing, with miles of trails and designated camping areas. Notable landmarks include Fort Robinson State Park nearby and the scenic White River Valley. The blend of forest and grassland environments offers a striking contrast not often found in one place, making this a compelling destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and wildlife encounters in a largely undeveloped landscape.
